The beginning
Mercedes-AMG: the beginning.

The beginning.

The AMG story begins 50 years ago with two engineers called Hans Warner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. They were working on the 300 SE racing engine when Daimler-Benz decided to discontinue all motorsport activities.

Despite this they kept working on the engine in their spare time, improving the performance until they had something world beating. It was then entered in to the 1965 German Touring Car Championship and won ten times in its first season.

In 1966 Aufrecht left Mercedes-Benz and founded "Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach engineering firm, design and testing for the development of racing engines".

The first milestone for his newly-founded company was second place at the 24 Hour of Spa in 1971. Throughout the 1970s AMG expanded, and in 1986 they implanted their customised 5.0 V8 into an E-Class. This car became known as 'The Hammer', one of the defining AMG models. In the late 1980s Daimler-Benz started working with AMG as official racing partners.

In 1990 AMG signed an agreement with Damiler-Benz AG which meant AMG products could be sold and serviced through Mercedes-Benz's worldwide dealer network.

From this time, the two companies worked closely on developing performance cars together including the C 36 AMG. In 1999 AMG was incorporated and Mercedes-AMG GmbH was created. Today the AMG model range is the largest and most diverse it has ever been.
