"Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair." Nelson Mandela, Laureus World Sports Awards, Monaco 2000.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation utilises the power of sport to address and overcome the social challenges of our time. Sport takes a central role in the initiatives funded by Laureus. To date, more than one million children and young people across the globe have been supported. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation currently funds more than 70 sport-based social projects worldwide, most of which focus on the issues of HIV-AIDS, drug abuse, violence, racial and religious discrimination, and social integration.
The members of the Laureus World Sports Academy serve as voluntary, unpaid ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Their visits to different Laureus projects motivate children and young people to participate in sport, and also raise public awareness of problems in today's society.
National Sport for Good Foundations have been set up in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and USA. More than one million children and young people aged 8-18 across the globe have been supported since the Foundation was established.
